Cindy Kapp, 26, works in San Diego, California, as a planner of event logistics and execution at East of Ellie, an events company. As a 2019 40 Under 40 honoree, Kapp discusses her passion for the events industry.
What I do:
I am responsible for organizing core logistics for the events our agency plans throughout the year. This falls under four major buckets: venue management, catering coordination, audiovisual coordination and furniture rentals. It’s my responsibility to take our clients’ brand and product guidelines and come up with creative ways to showcase these incredible products in the light that they deserve to be shown.
How I got here:
My journey with East of Ellie started when I landed their summer internship role as a rising senior at Eastern Connecticut State University. Upon graduating, I took a position with a different company as a tradeshow logistics coordinator. After about a year, East of Ellie acquired a start-up client that needed someone on-site for three months in San Francisco to prep for a large company launch event. I was the girl for the job. I packed my bags and went! That was almost four years ago and the rest is history.
Greatest career accomplishment:
Our company was a Top 3 Finalist in Best Table Top Design category of the 2017 BizBash Event Style Awards for our dinner under the Bronson Gate at Paramount Studios. I was responsible for coordinating the furniture rentals and managing the florist to make our event design come to life. It was truly one of the most beautiful events I’ve ever witnessed, let alone be apart of the planning process.
Over the past few weeks, I negotiated a food and beverage minimum in a very popular NYC Times Square venue down 26 percent.
Specific improvement I’ve made:
I started in 2013 at East of Ellie as the first of two social media interns. Our social media accounts existed and postings were done here and there, but an actual strategy and someone to dedicate some time to this was lacking. Throughout my senior year of college, I wrote our blog posts from my university library and tweeted my way through halls. I couldn’t help but to grow passionate about continuing this company’s social presence. Now, I am proud that we have an in house graphic designer and social media coordinator who are able to implement the processes I put into place for running our social accounts and act as our marketing department who can do the job proficiently.
What I am working on now:
I’m excited to plan and execute an event at MetLife Stadium this year. Sometimes square footage and audio capabilities are limited, but not at an NFL stadium! I’m excited to see what creative ideas we will bring to life for our client at this venue.
What I do outside of work:
I’m either biking, longboarding or walking the Pacific Beach boardwalk almost every afternoon. I also love cooking healthy meals using fresh ingredients and am an avid photographer.
