Pope Francis may have set a new philanthropic standard. A papal-gifted hog—a Harley-Davidson originally autographed (and blessed) by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI—was sold at a Bonhams Paris auction early in 2015. The FLSTC Heritage Softail Classic bike, which retails for upward of $20,000, collected $52,000 for charity. The chopper was supposed to be presented to Pope Benedict in front of tens of thousands of riders belonging to Italian Harley-Davidson associations in 2013, but he abdicated his position at exactly the wrong time. Hence, the ride became the property of Pope Francis, who decided auction proceeds should go to Friendly World Association, a nonprofit organization in Poland offering care and support to children and families in need. Holy Harley!
