Michael Gunn, CMP, CFMP, describes himself as compassionate, insightful and humorous. Learn more about him.
What I Do: I am my team’s most enthusiastic cheerleader and a prominent voice for our industry in my community.
How I Got Here: I began my career in the hospitality business more than 35 years ago when I worked as a bellman for Omni Hotels. I subsequently held positions in sales, front desk positions, night audit, convention services, and food and beverage control before joining the CVB and rising the ranks.
Greatest Career Accomplishment: I have served on a number boards of directors for national and international associations, and I am proud of my affiliation with those organizations. But my greatest career accomplishment has been to contribute to the cultural and economic growth of the greater Birmingham area, to share this city with planners and visitors, and to boost Birmingham’s recognition as a meeting and tour destination on an international scale.
Specific Improvement I've Made: People have told me that I helped open the door for other African Americans to view this industry as a career opportunity. When I began in sales with the Birmingham CVB, I often attended our annual convention, and I was one of only a handful of African Americans among the hundreds of attendees.
What I Do Outside of Work: Golf is my favorite pastime. I also enjoy spending time with my grandchildren.
