Cauble is tasked with coordinating the The Foursquare Church’s annual conference, which is held in a different U.S. city each year and averages attendance of 4,000 people, ranging in age from newborns to senior citizens.

Cauble is approaching the 40th Foursquare convention in which he has served in a leadership capacity. Before that, he attended the church’s conventions with his family as a child and later as a representative of Life Pacific College, Foursquare’s college where he worked in his early adulthood. He recalls that while the leaders were doing the best they could, the conventions were chaotic and disorganized.

“I approached the denomination leadership and said, ‘You know I’m committed to Foursquare, but this is pitiful. We can do better,’” he recalls.

Open to his constructive criticism, the leaders suggested Cauble help make the improvements he recommended. He began as a volunteer overseeing the convention’s music, and his responsibilities gradually increased to managing audiovisual, venue contracts and meals.

Eventually, he was asked to coordinate attendee accommodations on top of these jobs.

“I said yes, but I reminded them I was living on my associate pastor salary with my wife and three kids,” he says. A financial agreement was reached, and the 2000 convention in Hawaii was Cauble’s first as an official convention staff member.

Over time, Cauble has initiated changes to the convention, like adding children’s programing.

“We used to just have a dedicated ‘cry room’ where parents could take their kids,” he says. “But we want this to be a family trip.”

Now, children, from infants through high school age, are invited to participate in age-appropriate programing and activities, and up to 650 children per year have done so. All activities for minors are held in a secure area with separate restrooms, a non-negotiable that factors into Cauble’s location scouting.

Cost is another driver in his destination selections.

“Growing up, my mom and dad had to watch every penny to be able to attend,” says Cauble. “I’m [always] looking to secure a win for both the corporate provider and the attendee."

Foursquare Connection has been held in cities from coast-to-coast, with the 2017 event in Washington, D.C., and the 2018 convention in Seattle in May. The 2019 convention is secured for Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville.

With such widespread host cities, the 14 geographic districts of the Foursquare denomination are an essential asset to Cauble’s work.

“We tap into each district to help with a different aspect of the event,” he explains. The churches in the host city’s district are called upon to help with furnishing the child care spaces with rockers and baby gear, along with supplying volunteers who can field questions at the info booth. Up to 100 volunteers are engaged to execute a convention, and many of them reside in the local district.

In addition to planning the Foursquare convention, Cauble manages book sales and speaking engagements for his ex-wife, Lisa Whelchel of “The Facts of Life” fame.

“We’re still best friends and see each other all the time, along with our three grown kids,” he says of Whelchel, who was his wife for 24 years.

In addition to his work with Foursquare, Cauble also plans events for organizations like the Christian Community Development Association and international gatherings for the C.S. Lewis Foundation.
