Alex Plaxen, MTA, 31, works in Silver Spring, Maryland, as president and founder of Little Bird Told Media. As a 2017 40 Under 40 honoree, Plaxen discusses his passion for the events industry.

What I do: I work closely with association event planners and their teams to develop and implement social media strategies for before, during and after their conferences and trade shows. The strategies cover everything from marketing and customer service and engagement to networking and content creation. It is my goal to rethink the way we use social media as a tool for events. How I got here: I launched Little Bird Told Media in January 2016 after I left my job as director of marketing for EventRebels. Prior to that I achieved my master’s in tourism administration with a discipline in event and meeting management from George Washington University. In graduate school I held internships with the events team at the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology and business development team at RedPeg Marketing. My greatest career accomplishment: This year I joined the events industry speaker circuit to share my knowledge about social media and events. I have spoken at or am scheduled to speak at Connect, PCMA Convening Leaders, MPI World Education Congress, IMEX America and ASAE Annual Meeting and Expo, in addition to many regional events.  Impressive stats: In 2016, I worked with HX: The Hotel Experience trade show to grow its reach by 240 percent and mentions by 63 percent, as well as double impressions from 20,000 to 40,000. My work with the show included launching a new Instagram account and incorporating a livestream strategy. The livestream had over 14,000 views during the event. What I’m working on: I’m building a modular online training course for exhibitors and sponsors to enhance their social media presence at association conferences and trade shows. This online course will train them how to better engage attendees at the show and increase their ROI. What I do outside of work: I currently sit on the board of directors for the MPI Potomac Chapter in Washington, D.C.
