Almost completely destroyed during the Cold War, the mostly rebuilt Dubrovnik blends its rich history with a modern presence, attracting tourists and meetings alike. Here are five reasons planners are choosing Dubrovnik for their events.
1. It’s accessible.
Traveling to Dubrovnik is getting easier with increasing direct flights from many European cities and ferryboats from neighboring Italy. A scenic bus ride from Italy or Greece is also an option (and probably the best one).
2. Lodging is plentiful.
As a conference and incentive city, Dubrovnik has numerous lodging options from four- and five-star hotels, many of which overlook the sea. Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Dubrovnik Sun Gardens is a standout five-star resort with 201 rooms and suites and meeting venues for up to 1,000 guests. With their unique ambiance, venues like Revelin Fortress, Marin Drzic Theatre, Sponza Palace and Rector's Palace also serve as great locations for special events.
3. It provides a learning experience.
Aside from tourism, olive oil production is a key industry for the city of Dubrovnik. The oil is mostly produced at large-scale farms with industrial presses, but small family farms are available to groups. These homesteads teach how oil was pressed in ancient times—when horses had to turn the machines—and dish up oil samples on salads and breads.
4. Day excursions are unbeatable.
There are a number of opportunities for day excursions departing from Dubrovnik’s Gruz Harbour. Popular ones include the islands of Lokrum and Mljet and the gorgeous country of Montenegro. (Note: You need a passport to enter the latter.) Kayaking is a must at each location, where there are plenty of other water activities in the crystal-clear waters great for teambuilding.
5. It has celebrity appeal.
For enthusiasts of the HBO drama “Game of Thrones,” this city is a fan’s dreamland. Inside the ancient city walls, otherwise known as King’s Landing, are many restaurants, shops and other iconic references from the TV show. Tour guides who were extras on set share firsthand accounts of the show as they take groups across town. End the GOT walking tour with a cozy cable car ride to the top of the towering hill of Srd, and find spectacular city views. Follow it with a fabulous hilltop dinner at Panorama Restaurant & Bar.
*** Chances are Dubrovnik is a bucket-list destination for many clients. And, with its incredible history and selection of things to see and do, planners will have no difficulty promoting the city.
